| Summary |
AFAX is a range of synthetic or amorphous continuous
casting mould fluxes in powder or granular form for the
steel bloom and slab market segment. |
|
| Description |
AFAX is based on Kawasaki/Sakai technology and comes
in both powder and granular form. AFAX GR fluxes are
a group of specially formulated, low dust, spherical
granular fluxes which are designed to produce higher
quality steel under various casting conditions. The spherical
shape gives excellent flowability and an even insulation
layer. Patented technology provides preferential concentration
of carbon on the outside of each granule providing non-sintering
characteristics allowing for high melting speed whilst
reducing slag rim and minimising carbon pick up in the
final steel. AFAX P is a series of fluxes made from synthetic
raw materials selected with rigorous care to meet specific
requirements. By the combination of different types of
carbon, the correct speed and type of melting is achieved. |
|
| Application |
AFAX formulations are available for all steel grades
cast at speeds from 0.4m/min to 6.0 m/min. Application
is normally manual in the case of AFAX P but can be automated
in the case of AFAX GR. The automatic flux feeder is
a simple and effective gravity fed applicator designed
specifically for use with flowable granular fluxes such
as AFAX GR. Application rate varies from 0.4 to 1.0 kg/min
depending on the form of the AFAX and the casting conditions. |
|
| Function |
A continuous casting mould flux must satisfy various
requirements including thermal insulation, chemical insulation,
inclusion absorption, lubrication, and promotion of uniform
heat transfer through the mould. The relative importance
of these properties varies according to the steel grade,
the prevailing casting conditions and the end steel requirements.
Careful consideration of all these conditions is taken
when designing the correct mould flux for the job. |
|
| Benefits |
 |
AFAX fluxes are designed to be robust enough to
maintain peak performance even under unstable conditions,
helping to reduce breakouts and thereby increase
caster productivity.
|
 |
High performance AFAX GR spherical granular fluxes
can produce higher quality steel even under high-speed
conditions.
|
 |
Low density for better insulation.
|
 |
Give excellent even melt and flow and are environmentally
friendly.
