Summary REACTOL, (TUNDISOL, AFAX TD) is an active tundish cover used on the surface of the steel in the tundish during casting for the purpose of thermal insulation, chemical insulation and inclusion removal.

Description REACTOL is a powder product supplied in bags. It is continually added to the surface of the steel in the tundish during casting. It consists of a mixture of active components, which have a melting point below that of molten steel, and is designed to absorb inclusions and prevent reoxidation of the steel.

Application

After teeming starts and the tundish metal level is above the bottom of the ladle shroud, REACTOL is applied on top of the tundish metal surface. As casting proceeds further additions of REACTOL are made from time to time to replenish the cover flux. Where a tundish lid is used, the REACTOL bag can be added through the openings provided in the tundish.

For best results it is recommended that a REACTOL active tundish cover is used in combination with RADEX tundish insulating powder to ensure optimum performance of inclusion capture and minimise temperature loss.

A range of recipes is available to suit all steel grades.

Function An exposed metal surface leads to reoxidation and heat losses. Moreover, refractory and other non-metallic inclusions which float to the surface of the tundish during casting can get mixed back in with the metal and carried down into the mould, where they become trapped and form defects in the final cast product. When applied to the surface of the liquid steel in the tundish, TUNDISOL immediately forms a liquid slag at the steel/slag interface, thus preventing reoxidation and heat loss of the steel. The flux is designed to have a high solubility for alumina and other non-metallic inclusions which float to the surface of the steel in the tundish.

Benefits
Steel cleanliness is improved, especially at start-up and ladle change.
Temperature losses are reduced, improving internal and surface quality of the steel being produced.
