| Summary |
TURBOSTOP is a revolutionary Tundish Flow Control System
designed to improve significantly both the quality of
the steel produced during continuous casting and the
predictability and reproduction of mixed grade casting
practices. |
|
| Description |
The flow control system is based on Foseco Steel’s
patented TURBOSTOP turbulence suppressor, used in conjunction
with Foseco’s complementary range of tundish furniture
including FOSCAST dams, weirs and baffles. Individual
systems are designed to meet specific customer requirements
using Foseco Steel’s extensive Water Modelling
facilities, which simulate both steady state casting
and ladle change practices, to ensure that optimum performance
is achieved. |
|
| Application |
TURBOSTOP is installed in the tundish during re-lining,
and positioned to be beneath the pouring stream during
casting. Best results are obtained by ensuring that the
ladle stream is central, but TURBOSTOP can be specially
designed to eliminate the effect of off-centre casting. |
|
| Function |
TURBOSTOP works by dampening the energy of the incoming
stream, thus suppressing turbulence in the pour area.
The resultant upward flow eliminates short-circuiting
of the steel through the tundish, giving a more controlled
steel flow with a uniform, lower velocity profile and
increased level of \'plug flow\'. |
|
| Benefits |
 |
Initial splash is reduced, giving improved safety
and working conditions. |
 |
Faster filling of the tundish can be achieved,
improving starting performance and initial cleanliness.
|
 |
Permanent lining is increased by reducing wear
on tundish refractories in the pour area.
|
 |
Plug flow is increased, reducing dead volume and
improving temperature homogenisation.
|
 |
Residence time is extended, giving improved inclusion
float out and reduced nozzle blockage, resulting
in cleaner steel.
|
 |
Turbulence, reoxidation and slag entrapment are
reduced, improving steel cleanliness.
|
 |
Steady state conditions are quickly re-established
after ladle change, reducing downgrade and thereby
improving steel yield.
|
 |
More predictable grade change chemistry reduces
steel scrap and downgrade. |
