| Summary |
SLAX-Deox is a slag conditioner used to treat the ladle
slag before treatment of the steel in the RH Degasser. |
|
| Description |
SLAX-Deox is a briquetted product composed primarily
of a high quality deoxidant combined with an efficient
slag conditioner.
|
|
| Application |
SLAX-Deox is added to the surface of the ladle slag immediately
after completion of tap. Top or bottom stirring of the
steel helps the reaction. The addition rate depends on
the level of FeO+MnO in the slag, and varies between
1 and 2 Kg per steel tonne. |
|
| Function |
Carry-over slag from the BOF has up to 25% reducible
oxides such as FeO and MnO, which are a major source
of contamination and reoxidation for the steel. During
the production of ultra low carbon steel, the heats are ‘opened
tapped’ to facilitate the carbon removal in the
RH-degasser. However, even with slag retention techniques,
slag will find its way into the ladle and be a source
of contamination in the final steel due to entrapment
and ladle vortexing, and will also affect the efficiency
of RH-degassing process. The aim is to reduce the FeO+MnO
in the slag to acceptable levels (preferably < 5%)
and to maintain adequate slag fluidity. By using SLAX-Deox
the detrimental effect of the slag can be significantly
reduced. |
